After a disastrous lapse (Agents of Influence, 1977), Harcourt returns with a reasonably diverting exercise in beleaguered diplomacy - even if it winds up once again with an evil Oriental conspiracy at the root of everything. Narrator Piers Tyburn of the British Embassy in Paris becomes the reluctant confidant of an Embassy colleague, an old school chum who believes that a high British official is being blackmailed. When the suspicious fellow falls(?) to his death from the Arc de Triomphe, it appears that he was blackmailee and therefore a suicide - until his wife and retarded son are shot by a mysterious Japanese duo. Ah, so - the Rengo Sekigun are at work, kidnapping the Ambassador's son and forcing the Ambassador to help them assassinate the prime ministers of France and England. Once unraveled, it's the same old story, but getting there involves a few spruce clues and some unassumingly engaging characters. (Kirkus Reviews)

Naughty, comical, slightly arch doings in an English village - with a heroine who gets away with murder (on page one), a cozy old meddling dear of a sleuth, lots of lust, and much to-do over a priceless piece of Staffordshire pottery. The blithe murderess is Doreen Corder, who trips her antique-shop-owner husband and calmly watches him tumble down the stairs. The sleuth is Doreen's tough old mum, Mrs. Thomas from Cardiff, who investigates not murder (Doreen's crime remains perfect and unpunished) but the disappearance - during the wake - of the "Pew Group a pottery piece which Doreen has just bought from a sexy tinker. . . who himself picked it up at the local charity bazaar. Among the suspects (all of whom come down with diarrhea, thanks to Mrs. Thomas' baked ham): the vicar, who carries on a running dialogue with God; a sex-starved spinster; homosexual partners in a rival antique shop; an American millionaire who's hot for Staffordshire. And before the movements of the Pew Group are sorted out, there'll be unlikely pairings - the tinker with a grande dame, the spinster (a blackmail expert) with a reluctant, handsome young curate, Doreen with antique-r "Betsey" Trottwood - and a fair measure of over-complicated foolishness. Little mystery value, but considerable stylish fun - with more than a few moments of truly inspired, deadpan hilarity. (Kirkus Reviews)

Taming of Annabelle Taming of Annabelle PDF By author Marion Chesney last download was at 2017-06-10 56:02:47. This book is good alternative for Paradise Smith. Download now for free or you can read online Taming of Annabelle book.
Though the marrying-off of the Reverend Armitage's second daughter doesn't have the freshness and wit of Minerva (p. 674), it's pleasant to meet up again with the irreverent Rev, his cronies, and that brass-band Malaprop, Lady Godolphin - a distant relative and Minerva's aged, naughty patron. (Even here, however, there's a falling off-with overkill in the verbal howlers.) The ingenue this time: Annabelle, 17, uncommonly pretty and uncommonly brattish - who has a monstrous tendre for none other than Lord Sylvester, Minerva's betrothed; she's sure that Sylvester's making a dreadful mistake in marrying such a "prim" sister. Minerva herself, however, far from prim and ever more beautiful, is unaware of Annabelle's roiling fantasies - and unwisely invites her to the estate of Sylvester's parents, the Duke and Duchess of Allsbury. And soon the stunning Annabelle is a stunning pain - trotting out what she believes to be fashionable slang (earthy prison talk, in fact), evading Minerva's supervision, and pursuing Sylvester. . . until the horrible truth dawns. He is in love with Minerva! At that point, then, "jealousy, horrible, green-eyed, sealed and clawed," takes hold - as Annabelle impulsively flirts with pleasant Peter, the Marquess of Brabington, accepting his marriage proposal. So there's a double wedding, with a dandy wedding night for Annabelle. . . until she pants out the wrong name in passion! Her new husband hurtles from the house, of course; Rev. Armitage and his chum Squire Radford have to go into Mr. Fixit action - with conferences and planning sessions. And thus the Taming of Annabelle gets underway - with the Marquess pointedly ignoring her, to strong effect: the bride is jealous, gets a few nasty surprises (she winds up dangling in a tree at one point). . . and is ready, at last, for a melting reconciliation. Lively enough, with Chesney's asides on Regency fashion, places and people, and the gormless Royal Family - even if a comedown after the sparkling Minerva. (Perhaps daughter #3, Deirdre, will pick up the pace in the next Armitage marriage-mart episode.) (Kirkus Reviews)

Yet another variation on the strong, silent Shane-ish (now Clint Eastwood-ish) scenario: a novella, narrated in rough-folksy style ("I have wrote down what hapened back in Virginia City the way I seen it") by teenager Thomas "Grubber" Graves. The Gallagher of the title is the noble, taciturn wagonmaster/lawman who sort-of adopts 13-year-old Grubber when the kid is orphaned. (Gallagher once loved the kid's ma.) So the two of them ride West circa 1863; along the way they rescue a family that's lost in the snowy, icy Pioneer Mountains. And once in gold-mad Virginia City - "It seemed like the whole territory had come to that one town and all got crazy drunk" - Gallagher and Grubber witness some of the killings perpetrated by corrupt Sheriff Hummer and his vile road agents. Will Gallagher agree when local good-folk ask him to lead vigilante action against these villains? Well, at first he's only willing to hunt down two of the killer road-agents and bring them to trial. But when the killers, though convicted, are permitted to escape, the vigilante committee is formed ("either vigilante law or no law atall. . . you don't reason with a clutch of rattlesnakes"), the bad guys are shot down. . . and Gallagher himself falls victim to the infectious violence. Some crisp action (the opening snow-rescue is best), and Grubber's artfully illiterate narration is effective about half the time - but essentially just the old, old silent-stranger story again, with no depths and no surprises. Snowflake in My Hand Snowflake in My Hand PDF By author Samantha Mooney last download was at 2017-01-23 26:43:58. This book is good alternative for Paradise Smith. Download now for free or you can read online Snowflake in My Hand book. Samantha Mooney's personal account of her years of work in New York's famous animal medical centre cancer clinic. A story full of wonderful cat characters.

For the last ten years Mooney has devoted her working hours and much of her spare time to the often terminally ill cats under treatment at the Cancer Therapy Unit of N.Y.'s Animal Medical Center. Here, she writes tenderly, almost poetically, about the often long-term relationships (friendships, as it were) that she develops with her patients. "I know in advance how little time there is to love them and make them comfortable," site observes. "Their lives are even more valuable to me, because they must feel when they die that they are loved." And so, while aiding in traditional cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy), Mooney learns "the importance of a quality life, and the sorrowful dignity of death." The focus is on individual patients - like Clancy, who greets Mooney daily at the elevator, and Chico, who accompanies her on brief vacations at Fire Island. Then there's little Fledermaus. When Mooney grapples with the loss of her own father - also, to cancer - it's the doomed cat who helps her tope. "Only Fledermaus, first in shy curiosity, walked upon the cold surface of my frozen emotions, leaving gentle pawprints on the glassy panel. . . ." A tender yet candid approach to feline cancer - and heart-rending for cat lovers. (Kirkus Reviews)

Inspector Evariste Pel - still the self-deprecating, intuitive martinet, but softening under the influence of widow Genevieve - stars in another solid French police-procedural, with major mayhem again disturbing the Burgundy countryside. This time, as usual, there's a double-focus for Pel and his squad: the murder of 13-year-old boy Charles Crebert coincides with a terrorist confrontation that leaves three policemen dead and uncovers a plot on the life of the President (due to visit the area in three weeks). Much painstaking sleuthing unmasks the boy's murderer - and leads eventually to a terrorist hideout, where a deftly chronicled siege ends with the assassins made powerless, their elaborate plot in shreds. Even better, in the process, Pel finally finds a way to arrange for the public embarrassment of nationally known TV newsman Robert Demon, smooth-talking critic of police and their methods - after which the Inspector returns to his clumsy courtship of the patient widow. Straightforwardly satisfying. (Kirkus Reviews)

Another tangle of cases for mostly morose Inspector Pel and his trusty French-provincial police team. Hard-working Nosjean is sure that gangster Duche has been stabbed by rival gang-leader Sammy Belec - but can't break Sammy's alibi. Aristocratic newcomer De Troquereau is determined to find the assailant who's been beating up harmless homosexuals. And those are minor problems compared to the disappearance of industrialist Francois Rensselaer, a rags-to-riches womanizer whose wife, daughter, and son-in-law all heartily dislike him. But Pel concentrates instead on the staff at the isolated former abbey where Rensselaer stables his stag-hunting hounds - a sulky lot: huntsman Henri Fabri; his attractive, restless wife Michelline; gypsyish young whipper-in Cottu; and Algerian laborer Retif, a deaf-mute. The major clues.? Some ransom demands. . . and, above all, the report of a dog with acid-burnt paws. Solid, complex and leisurely, with a touch of Gallic charm - as Pel continues to brood over his smoking, his lazy housekeeper, and court-able widow Genevieve. (Kirkus Reviews)

A terribly British, terribly funny satire/farce - featuring associate architect Charles Sweet, who is "shortish, plumpish, white." Charles wears bow ties - the badge of "scoundrels and foreigners and lucky nasty little men with lubricious tarts." He also has horrendous hay fever, rabbity pink eyes - and one ear has lately begun to feel furry! So, while going through the extramarital/business mayhem in this fiendishly comic entertainment, Charles will be forever, furtively, stroking his ear. At work Charles manages to elude the doom scheduled for him by his wily, boorish superiors: a building project is heftily mangled, thanks to a snaky contractor and the firm's general ineptness, while Charles keeps a sense of his priorities: "Hard work should clearly be left to younger men." But things go somewhat less well when Charles, whose marriage to nagging Helen is "a damp squid," dabbles in adultery. His seduction of curvy secretary Carol ends in a Mr. Hulot-style day at the beach, a roll in a bilge-fragrant scow, and a toss in the mud - with a giggling obbligato from Carol. Even worse, Charles is pursued by the wife of a boss, Myra Kowski, a chain-smoker who smells "like a cinema carpet": their cornfield idyll becomes an idyll-interruptus when Myra's puffing sets fire to the field, bringing on a crowd of furious locals (whom Myra routs with a wine bottle). And throughout the nasty festivities - which end with Charles (who gets a new job) reunited with Helen (who doffs her tiresome lovers) - our hero visits a maddening psychiatrist named Dr. Clamp, who sucks his teeth. . . and remains ever-unfazed by Charles' reports. (Also included: the doings of Charles' sinister chum Hesketh, who seems to have killed his wife and buried her under a row of cabbages; and a big party thrown by another chum, featuring a boggling glimpse of S/M slap-and-tickle.) From the author of such vigorous, full-bodied period sagas as Regent Square and The Iron Roads: a hilarious, if very special/British, slice of darkish comedy - somewhat in the Kingsley Amis tradition. An Israeli/Jordanian team of super-spies valiantly tries to prevent a self-proclaimed Muslim messiah from unleashing a nuclear holocaust - in a long, busy, farfetched thriller that mixes gore and technology with broodingly intense characterizations. It's 1973, and both Israel and Jordan have deduced that Abu Ismail, leader of the Warriors of Jihad, is planning something big and terrible - "Operation Dragons." So Israeli agent Boaz, who's neurotic, suicidal, and impotent (guilt over the violent deaths of both mother and sister), joins up with Jordanian agent Osman in an assassination plan: posing as pilgrims to Mecca, they carry out an elaborate scheme to isolate fellow-pilgrim Abu Ismail, then kill him - only to discover they've murdered a double! Meanwhile, the real Abu Ismail has been putting together his mad plot with Soviet/Libyan assistance: he hijacks plutonium from a French plane in Lisbon; he recruits a Japanese Red Arm explosives/ electronics expert; he abducts a Lebanese physicist; he locates a hideout in the Ethiopian mountains; he enlists support from Ethiopian rebels; he plans, you see, to drop a nuclear bomb on Mecca. . . and put the blame on Israel. The action, then, shifts largely to Ethiopia, jumping around from the Abu Ismail bomb-building contingent (much of which dies from radiation sickness) to the Israeli/Jordanian/Ethiopian/French/CIA anti-Abu Ismail contingent - all trying to track down the terrorists' hideout. (Among the Israelis is Falasha-born Sanbat, who adores Boaz, eventually curing his impotence after she suffers rape/torture similar to that suffered by Boaz's dead sister.) And finally, following dozens of deaths, much cat-and-mouse, and Abu Ismail's elimination of a beloved Judas, there's a long, moment-by-moment showdown at Addis Ababa airport: hijacking, hostages, and Boaz's debate-cum-hand-to-hand-combat with Abu Ismail, who can detonate that nuclear bomb at any moment via a trigger in his tooth. First-novelist Farhi does an effective, clever job with several of the action-sequences here, especially the Mecca assassination episode (with intriguing hajj details). He works hard at suggesting Boaz's existential misery, the complex Boaz/Osman friendship, the Abu Ismail fanaticism. But the largely implausible plot - less authentic-seeming than that of The Fifth Horseman - is too fragmented and ill-paced to provide steady suspense; and, despite some serious touches, this ungainly, inventive doomsday-book will probably appeal most to fanciers of techno-oriented combat/intrigue. What happened to the shrewd, comic talents on display in Gallagher's first novel, Spend It Foolishly (1978)? You won't, alas, find them here - in a competent, fairly glossy, but utterly humorless stretching-out of an old Daphne du Maurier-ish romance/suspense plot. The narrator is young N.Y. lawyer Patrick Mot, who burbles (in awfully un-masculine prose rhythms) of his love for mysterious, beautiful Neva Rive - whom he meets on Fifth Ave. one evening and loves at first sight. . . even though ambitious model Neva is a touchy, anorectic recluse who says such old lines as: "I can't tell you, darling. If you start to know things. . . that will be the end." What is Neva's secret? Who is the man named Lowry whose communications terrify her? The questions peak when Patrick takes Neva home to his folksy Wisconsin family for Christmas: Neva, it turns out, also comes from Wisconsin - and her parents (sadistic father, insane mother) figured in a weird disappearance five years ago. So, when Neva herself disappears after revealing that the dreaded Lowry is her husband, Patrick starts digging up the details of Neva's secret past. Did Lowry kill Neva's hateful father? Did Neva herself do the dirty deed? And what happened to Neva's brutalized mother? All is explained - clunkishly - in a showdown/eavesdropping session back in N.Y.; and after Lowry is violently disposed of, the lovers part but will try to rescue some happiness years later, even if Neva (now a superstar) is "the woman who had cut me in the heart so deeply that she had changed me from an eager, fearless boy into a man who was bitter and angry and afraid of love." A harmless recycling of ladies'-mag-suspense cliches - with enough skillful touches to suggest that Gallagher might still follow up her promising first novel with something a lot better than this hackneyed diversion.
