An Israeli/Jordanian team of super-spies valiantly tries to prevent a self-proclaimed Muslim messiah from unleashing a nuclear holocaust - in a long, busy, farfetched thriller that mixes gore and technology with broodingly intense characterizations. It's 1973, and both Israel and Jordan have deduced that Abu Ismail, leader of the Warriors of Jihad, is planning something big and terrible - "Operation Dragons." So Israeli agent Boaz, who's neurotic, suicidal, and impotent (guilt over the violent deaths of both mother and sister), joins up with Jordanian agent Osman in an assassination plan: posing as pilgrims to Mecca, they carry out an elaborate scheme to isolate fellow-pilgrim Abu Ismail, then kill him - only to discover they've murdered a double! Meanwhile, the real Abu Ismail has been putting together his mad plot with Soviet/Libyan assistance: he hijacks plutonium from a French plane in Lisbon; he recruits a Japanese Red Arm explosives/ electronics expert; he abducts a Lebanese physicist; he locates a hideout in the Ethiopian mountains; he enlists support from Ethiopian rebels; he plans, you see, to drop a nuclear bomb on Mecca. . . and put the blame on Israel. The action, then, shifts largely to Ethiopia, jumping around from the Abu Ismail bomb-building contingent (much of which dies from radiation sickness) to the Israeli/Jordanian/Ethiopian/French/CIA anti-Abu Ismail contingent - all trying to track down the terrorists' hideout. (Among the Israelis is Falasha-born Sanbat, who adores Boaz, eventually curing his impotence after she suffers rape/torture similar to that suffered by Boaz's dead sister.) And finally, following dozens of deaths, much cat-and-mouse, and Abu Ismail's elimination of a beloved Judas, there's a long, moment-by-moment showdown at Addis Ababa airport: hijacking, hostages, and Boaz's debate-cum-hand-to-hand-combat with Abu Ismail, who can detonate that nuclear bomb at any moment via a trigger in his tooth. First-novelist Farhi does an effective, clever job with several of the action-sequences here, especially the Mecca assassination episode (with intriguing hajj details). He works hard at suggesting Boaz's existential misery, the complex Boaz/Osman friendship, the Abu Ismail fanaticism. But the largely implausible plot - less authentic-seeming than that of The Fifth Horseman - is too fragmented and ill-paced to provide steady suspense; and, despite some serious touches, this ungainly, inventive doomsday-book will probably appeal most to fanciers of techno-oriented combat/intrigue. Quicksilver Quicksilver PDF By author Mary Gallagher last download was at 2017-11-25 17:16:44. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online Quicksilver book.
What happened to the shrewd, comic talents on display in Gallagher's first novel, Spend It Foolishly (1978)? You won't, alas, find them here - in a competent, fairly glossy, but utterly humorless stretching-out of an old Daphne du Maurier-ish romance/suspense plot. The narrator is young N.Y. lawyer Patrick Mot, who burbles (in awfully un-masculine prose rhythms) of his love for mysterious, beautiful Neva Rive - whom he meets on Fifth Ave. one evening and loves at first sight. . . even though ambitious model Neva is a touchy, anorectic recluse who says such old lines as: "I can't tell you, darling. If you start to know things. . . that will be the end." What is Neva's secret? Who is the man named Lowry whose communications terrify her? The questions peak when Patrick takes Neva home to his folksy Wisconsin family for Christmas: Neva, it turns out, also comes from Wisconsin - and her parents (sadistic father, insane mother) figured in a weird disappearance five years ago. So, when Neva herself disappears after revealing that the dreaded Lowry is her husband, Patrick starts digging up the details of Neva's secret past. Did Lowry kill Neva's hateful father? Did Neva herself do the dirty deed? And what happened to Neva's brutalized mother? All is explained - clunkishly - in a showdown/eavesdropping session back in N.Y.; and after Lowry is violently disposed of, the lovers part but will try to rescue some happiness years later, even if Neva (now a superstar) is "the woman who had cut me in the heart so deeply that she had changed me from an eager, fearless boy into a man who was bitter and angry and afraid of love." A harmless recycling of ladies'-mag-suspense cliches - with enough skillful touches to suggest that Gallagher might still follow up her promising first novel with something a lot better than this hackneyed diversion. When Derek Almourn, First Secretary of the British Embassy in Washington, weds Lynn Charlton, the outspoken daughter of a U.S. Senator, the dream match has nightmarish repercussions. First, the two are roughed up and mugged in their own D.C. garage. Then, a diplomatic post switch to Oslo nets more unpleasantness - she's fed some LSD and he's nearly drowned. The inexplicable mishaps seem to be connected with Lynn's anti-war activist friend Virginia Urse as well as with an ominous gift-bearing character named Bruno. Derek cannot help but "flounder on" until his wife turns a NATO visit to the Russo-Norwegian border into a sticky international incident. Entertaining intrigue fair and square by the author of Climate for Conspiracy. (Kirkus Reviews)

The Bride The Bride PDF By author Bapsi Sidhwa last download was at 2018-02-28 03:10:06. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online The Bride book.
In her gust novel (The Crow Eaters, 1982) Sidhwa displayed her wry familiarity with the delicate familial and societal ligatures of a Parsi enclave in Lahore, Pakistan; here she reaches into other sectors - primitive Himalaya tribesmen, uprooted Muslims - as she grippingly dramatizes a young Muslim girl's ordeal. Qasim, a simple Himalaya man "whose impulses were as direct and concentrated as pinpoints of heat," avenges an insult in a traditional killing - and must flee Indian "justice" on a refugee train in 1947, the year of the Partition. Accompanying him: Zaitoon, orphaned by mob massacres at five, adopted by Qasim because she reminds him of his dead daughter. The two arrive in Lahore; Qasim teams up with Nikka, a wrestler/bully/hit-man who bludgeons his way to successful shopkeeping. And it is Nikka's wife Miriam who lovingly raises Zaitoon in her society of purdah-bound women: "the dim maze of inner rooms. . .the benign squalor of the women's quarters drew Zaitoon, as it did all its inhabitants, into the mindless, velvet vortex of the womb." Later, however, to Miriam's horror, Qasim has arranged a marriage for Zaitoon with one of his home tribesmen in the mountains: among these harsh people of ruthless tribal pride an educated city girl, Miriam warns, will be brutalized. Nonetheless, Qasim takes Zaitoon off on a trek to the mountains, where their path crosses that of Pakistani engineer Farukh and his American wife Carol - who's in a kind of immature, mindless muddle over the sexual mores of her new culture, wavering between erotic abandonment and simmering anger. Finally, then, the pathos and terror of Zaitoon's death-haunted escape will push Carol to a decision: "Your civilization is too ancient. . . too different . . .and it has ways that can hurt me. . . really hurt me. . . I'm going home." With Sidhwa's keen awareness of breath-stopping scenery of complex societies, of the Muslim woman's peculiar strengths and acute vulnerabilities: a delicate tale of power and intelligence, never overbearing in its message-delivery. Quickenberry Tree Quickenberry Tree PDF By author Annette Motley last download was at 2018-07-29 46:13:32. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online Quickenberry Tree book.
From the 1979 author of a glutinous Renaissance saga, The Sins of the Lion: lengthy, tedious family doings in England, 1641-1657 - the time of England's civil war, the deposition and execution of Charles I, the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, and the promise of the Restoration. The Heron family of Gloucestershire is largely Royalist in sympathies: Sir George and wife Mary, eldest son Tom, twins Humpty and Kit - all are, or will be, King's men. But young George, "Jud," will eventually become an admirer of Puritan Parliamentarian John Pym, running off Parliament pamphlets on his press, in partnership with his radical/democratic friend Rob Whit-taker (former ragamuffin, future brother-in-law). And Heron's daughter Lucy will be enraptured by ambivalently aligned Will Staunton, mercantile adventurer and nephew of the Earl of Warwick - who's both a partner to Pym (in planning American colonization) and a friend to the Court of King Charles I. Thus, it's Will who comes and goes from Heronscourt during the war, bringing aid and comfort, while Sir George and Tom fight various anti-Royalist armies. Meanwhile, the Herons suffer from the doings of Nehemiah Owerby, a stereotypical melodrama Puritan - Bible-toting, glowering, boiling with lust: he hangs priests and lasciviously pursues gentle Martha, a Heronscourt tenant whose mother was burnt as a witch. Eventually, however, Martha will be rescued, becoming widower Tom's second wife. . . while Lucy's romantic joys and miseries center on both dashing Irish Cathal O'Connor and husband Will (who'll father but one of their two children). Motley gives these rather limp characters bland 20th-century diction ("The war can't last forever") and similarly anachronistic outlooks; she has them try to explain the blither of political, diplomatic, and military moves in one of England's grandest historical messes. And though a few perky moments surface - a bit of military action, a sliver of eye-witness history (Charles' trial), romancing - there's yards and yards of parlor talk on the latest: a kind of soporific Westminster Week in Review, with sixth-graders as panelists. Simplistic, surprisingly uninformative, and dull. (Kirkus Reviews)

Download now for free or you can read online A Flower That's Free book. Young Kate Kingsley leaves Kenya to meet her English relations and find her place in life. Romantically inexperienced, Kate is swept off her feet by handsome young army officer Lawrence Drake, but the outbreak of the Second World War sets up personal upheavals as well as global ones.

Yet another war for the English Tennants, who did all that WW I coping in The Flowers of the Field (1980). Kate Kingsley, strong-willed and oddly handsome at 20, arrives in pre-WW II England after being raised in Kenya by Jack and Thea (nee Tennant) since the age of five - an orphan, parents unknown. Ah, but we'll know - although Kate won't for ages - that she's the natural daughter of Thea's still-beautiful, erstwhile-playgirl sister Dulcie, now being kept in London by her crass lover Rex. Soon Kate and her Kingsley brother, young Joe, move in with cantankerous Grandfather Ralph Tennant and bachelor Uncle Aubrey; Joe enters school; Kate begins work for a London settlement house, falling into love and wedlock with Lawrence Drake, a generous and stalwart army man. And there's grand romance for other family members too: "Aunt" Dulcie, resenting Rex, goes ape over newspaper columnist Bill Maguire; gentle Uncle Aubrey finds bliss with pleasant housekeeper Iris. (Meanwhile, Dulcie's dear friend, playwright Giles Huxley, involves himself in a painful homosexual affair with bitter, slum-raised Ernest Marx.) But, just as war breaks out, the family's contented status quo gets a major shake-up. Why? Because, though Kate loves Lawrence, she feels a Powerful (Mutual) Attraction . to Dulcie's beloved Bill! In fact, "if he touched her. . . she positively jangled with shock." So the adulterers' banked passion finally flares after a Dunkirk expedition - as Kate and Bill, on a borrowed yacht, brave heaving seas in a wild night during the evacuation. Then, with Lawrence stationed on Malta, Kate delivers a friend's baby while Lawrence saves Bill's life during the Malta siege. Bill refuses to allow Kate to leave Malta with him; Dulcie abort Bill's baby; Giles finally boots Ernest after a horrid show-down. And there'll be a tragedy, revelations, and a hard choice for Kate (Bill or Lawrence?) in the postwar fadeout. Leisurely and chatty, with just the right amount of mellow rue: a plump home-front romance, featherbed cosy. . . and so easy to sink into. (Kirkus Reviews)

Butcher's Boy Butcher's Boy PDF By author Thomas Perry last download was at 2017-11-02 20:53:57. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online Butcher's Boy book.
The "butcher's boy" is the nickname of the nameless, professional hired-killer whom first-novelist Perry follows through about half of this sturdy, overlong crime novel; the book's other, alternating half focuses on Elizabeth Waring of the Justice Dept., who's closing in on the "butcher's boy" by analyzing patterns in murder cases. First the killer uses dynamite to dispose of a union-man in California who was about to expose pension-fund manipulations by Fieldston Growth Enterprises. Target #2: Senator McKinley Claremont (curare in his Polident), who was planning to investigate - among other corporations - FGE. So, by the time the killer arrives in Las Vegas to pick up his fee from a middle-man, Elizabeth has started to figure out the FGE connection. Then, however, things get complicated - and a bit grisly: the people who hired the butcher's boy (the mobsters behind FGE) kill that middle-man and clearly are out to kill the hit-man himself, thus wiping out all traces of the hired assassinations. But, while the Justice Dept: team centers its investigation on Las Vegas (running into trouble with leaks and informers), the butcher's boy racks up a few more corpses, attempts to go underground, is pursued by assassins, and finally decides that he must identify - and permanently neutralize - the Mr. Big who's after him. (He does this by killing Fieldston of FGE and arranging a frame-up by planting the corpse on Mr. Big's property.) Perry's back-and-forth focus, an occasional plus, often becomes tedious here; and though some aspects of the hit-man's lifestyle are convincingly sketched, both the butcher's boy and Elizabeth are too vaguely characterized to generate strong reader involvement. Still, for devotees of hit-man techniques and Justice Dept. procedures: a serviceable work-up, without the gratuitous gore often found in Mafia/hit-man fictions. (Kirkus Reviews)

The Wasp Factory The Wasp Factory PDF By author Iain Banks last download was at 2018-06-05 50:46:38. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online The Wasp Factory book. Frank lives with his father outside a remote Scottish village. Frank's mother abandoned them years ago: his elder brother Eric is confined to a psychiatric hospital; and his father measures out his eccentricities on an imperial scale. Frank has turned to strange acts of violence to vent his frustrations.

The world according to Banks is inexhaustibly cruel and routinely malevolent. This outlook is perfectly encapsulated in his debut novel, first published in 1984, a twisted tale of sibling rivalry that takes in mutilation, exploding sheep and the eponymous apiary-cum-torture chamber. (Kirkus UK)

Little Sister Little Sister PDF By author Margaret Gaan last download was at 2017-08-21 00:31:05. This book is good alternative for Superbrain. Download now for free or you can read online Little Sister book.
An ingenuous but moderately appealing tale of domestic discord in a 1925 Chinese-American family . . . during the first Shanghai rumbles of Chinese Communist revolution. Two cousins - six-year-old Little Sister and teenager Celia - have been summoned to Shanghai for better schooling by their American grandfather. (Traveling by sea with snappish second Aunt as chaperone, the girls discover that Auntie needs a bit of chaperoning herself - when they peek into the Captain's bedroom.) And in Shanghai they are faced with two extremes of Chinese 20th-century lire: regal Grandmother, barely able to totter on her "Lily Feet"; and the Grandparents' adopted son "Lik" (Patrick) - who, with friend Min-Li, has grown tired of the talky inaction of Sun Yatsen's Revolutionary party . . . and secretly ventures into more drastic political commitment. (Suddenly there's Mr. Ling, who speaks of a strike - and a closed-door meeting with Mr. Chou, Chief of the Communist Party's strike committee.) Lik and Celia fall in love, another secret matter. Lik wonders about his parentage. (Could he have "bad blood"?) Also: what if Chou calls him away from Shanghai? Soon events are jostling, then, like junks on the Yangtse: Grandfather's heart attack; Min-Li's imprisonment for "subversion" in a silk factory; the giant May 30 demonstration, with marchers killed by British police, Lik wounded and imprisoned; Grandmother's rickshaw-hurtle to the US embassy; the devastating news of Lik's parentage; the revelation of terrible consequences of a youthful crime by Celia's father. And, eventually recovering but always grieving for Lik (who's now a Party worker forever apart from her), Celia will also work for Chou - to be "still connected to Lik, with something of his to think about, to be alert and alive about." Gaan (Last Moments of a World) never really succeeds here in blending the political with the domestic: the treatment of major events and issues often becomes unconvincing or simplistic. But, with alternating narration by Celia, Lik, and Little Sister, the household voices (though faint) do have a tidy, child-like grace - and undemanding readers will find this a small-scale history/family tale in an agreeably old-fashioned rein.
